The Lopez Community Land Trust is pioneering affordable community housing projects and forward thinking land use. Their Common Ground net zero straw bale compound is an outstanding example of sustainable living. In addition to welcoming them as a ONE ISLAND GREEN ORGANZATION AWARDEE – a big congratulations on their national recognition:

LCLT’s most recent housing neighborhood, Common Ground, was awarded first prize in the “new construction” category by the National Association of State Community Services Programs (NASCSP) in February of 2010. The neighborhood is a sustainable net zero energy project and received its award in part due to LCLT’s publication of the manual Land, Water, Energy, Resource Use: A System’s Approach.

What began as the seed of an idea at a Hollyhock retreat on Cortes Island in 2008 has become a multi-island conversation catalyzing connections between farmers and food banks, recycling programs, farmers markets, community green housing projects, solar and wind initiatives, youth programs, green businesses, and arts/culture and wellness practitioners.

During September and October, 2009, One Island convened the first Whidbey Island community conversation about this project’s collaborative cross-connection potential. December-January 2009-2010, Orcas and Lopez Islands joined the inter-island conversation and we broadened our regional scope to include the islands of the Salish Sea. Summer 2010 we opened a NW office on an organic farm on Orcas Island and have begun linking NW programs to our flagship center in Hawaii.

Interns and education program presenters are now undertaking exchanges between Whidbey, Orcas, and the Big Island of Hawaii.

Congratulations to Mukilteo Coffee and Ca’Buni Cafe for earning the One Island Northwest Green Business Award in recognition of their promotion of local, organic foods and fair trade organic coffees, fundraisers for green non-profit programs – like the Whidbey Island Farm Tour – and donations of supplies to our local community gardens and non-profit art and cultural events.
