Volunteers - a great learning experience!
Host

As interns, our helpers usually stay with us a minimum of 30 days, preferably at least 60 days. After the first 14 days we do a work review to qualify interested interns for additional hours, making it a 30-hour a week work plan that includes food. Energy efficiency and renewable energy community service programs are also hosted by One Island and may need assistance after the review period in addition to agriculture projects. (Registered service learning volunteers from university-based community service programs can develop a custom tailored academic program that balances ag and energy work)
General Interns: We provide rustic lodging and off-grid cooking facilities in open air, covered greenhouse or forested tent settings in exchange for 16 hours of guided work per week plus two vegetarian dinners each week with the crew. For those seeking a food stipend, an additional 14 hours a week (30 total) can become an option after the 14-day review. Otherwise, food and recreation funds should be brought with you or may be able to be supplemented helping other local farmers on a paid basis of $10-$12 hour depending on skill level.
University Interns: College students needing to complete their community service credits contribute a tuition fee to One Island in exchange for an academic learning component that meets their college requirements. We will work with you to establish, guide and monitor a place-based learning program that meets your graduation goals. Tuition stipend contributions average $400 a month depending on mentoring work load and goals.
Our non-profit educational organic farm is with-in 2 miles of the best snorkeling, nature sites, and historic monuments – this is a WONDERFUL neighborhood that truly is a tropical dream world with lush banana, mango, papaya, coffee, fruits, flowers, wild birds, butterflies and geckos in abundance.
You
We need independent, responsible, self-directed, collaborative workers - sense of humor, progressive political conversations, and dreams of a better world are welcome! Please leave personal dramas behind and enter into this farm-based learning experience as an intentional retreat that will provide ample opportunities to strengthen and enrich the whole person - body, mind and spirit. This is a magical place, a sanctuary that is a peaceful haven, and we ask our interns to help foster that ambience through intentional choices in their own lives, every day. We will meet in circle weekly, review our personal and group experiences, and plan for the coming work week. Transportation to grocery shopping will be provided and local sites, enrichment classes, and community events are a walk or hitch-able nearby. Bring your protective clothing and sun gear, sleeping bag and tent, roll up your sleeves and you will have a very memorable, enriching, and definately character building time in your life.
